1992-2002 GM 6.5 Engine Oil Pressure Switch

The same oil pressure switch was used from 1992 through 2002 on the GM 6.5L engines.  This switch had two functions.  One was to send the oil pressure signal to the dash mounted gauge, and the other was to signal the fuel feed pump to turn on.  Many times we have seen the dash gauge working but the feed pump was not turning on.  We have also seen both not working, so it can vary.  The fuel injection pump in the valley of the engine does have a mechanical pump that will pull some fuel into the injection pump even if the electrical feed pump on the frame rail is not working.  Engine performance will greatly suffer, especially when additional power is needed to tow or accelerate quickly.  We recommend changing the oil pressure switch each time you change the fuel feed pump.

A simple quick test to see if your feed pump is working is to open the air bleeder screw on the fuel filter.  Then turn the key on and see if there is fuel coming out.  If so the pump is working.  You can hook up a pressure gauge and you should see a positive 3 to 5 PSI.
