Co-Pilot 
The Allison transmission in GM trucks is controlled by a separate computer called the TCM. This computer is constantly monitoring and adapting the shift characteristics to match the most recent commands from the driver. The shifting strategy can be changed drastically, as demonstrated by the two different modes available (standard and tow haul). This computer can be over ruled by the ATS Co-Pilot. The ATS Co-Pilot takes control over the shifting strategies to more closely match the immediate demands of the driver instead of trying to catch up like the TCM does. The Co-Pilot also increases pressure when needed. The stock Allison transmission only receives approximately 86 PSI oil pressure to the clutch packs when in 5th gear (clamping force needed to apply the clutches). After the addition of the Co-Pilot transmission system, the clutch packs can receive full line pressure during high power situations, approximately 230 PSI. This additional pressure makes it harder for the clutches to slip and cause the transmission to go into the self protection mode known as "limp mode".
Note: On the six speed transmissions a deep pan is required with the installation of the Co-Pilot.

Five Star Converters & Performance Transmissions
The best way to upgrade your transmission, or the only recommended way to fix a transmission that has failed, is to get a complete unit built by ATS. ATS transmissions are designed to handle heavy loads and high horsepower. When towing extreme loads and in racing applications you need a transmission that delivers positive shifts without the hard jarring shifts that are commonly associated with performance transmissions. ATS tests every transmission they rebuild on a dyno before it leaves their shop.
The ATS viscous clutch drive is the heart of the revolutionary ATS Five Star Torque Converter. The Viscous Clutch Drive characteristic adds to the fluid-coupling portion of the torque converter to share in the transfer of power through the torque converter. Unlike other torque converters that rely only on fluid transfer from the impeller to the turbine via the stator, the Five Star utilizes additional viscous energy that increases the transfer of rotational energy from the engine to the transmission which in turn increases power and efficiency. When the Torque Converter Clutch is commanded to lock up, the 5 clutch plates provide a 100% mechanical engagement ensuring no plate slippage during lock up, even at power levels in excess of 2000 foot pounds of torque!

Transmission Upgrade Kits
If your transmission is in good shape, and you want to keep it that way due to power upgrades you have planned, then an upgrade kit is for you! ATS has designed upgrade kits to be used in transmissions that are working properly but will be subjected to higher towing demands and or performance demands. Installation of these upgrade kits do not equal the same level of complete transmission due to the various internal modifications and proprietary upgrades that ATS wants to keep to themselves. If your transmission has shown signs of failing, has high mileage, or has failed, then these kits are not for you. These kits are a preventative upgrade, not a cure for a broken transmission. Be sure to have a knowledgeable installer like Huckstorf Diesel do the work for you!
