aFeThe LLY Duramax trucks have a known issue with their turbo inlet tube.  The factory part was a compromise in flow versus space.  With the addition of the EGR system the inlet tube needed to take a sharp turn into the turbo.  This created a restriction to airflow in that turn.  To make things worse some of the manifolds had an additional restriction due to the process of creating the part.  The plastic mold has a seam at the bend and extra plastic protruded out into the airflow stream.  This is now considered the main reason for overheating issues during heavy towing conditions with LLY engine.  GM redesigned the turbo inlet tube on the next generation LBZ engines and the overheating issues were a thing of the past.  AFE took on this issue with their years of experience and knowledge of air movement.  It was a perfect fit for their multiple directional vain technology that they were already using with great success in their intercoolers.  The idea is simple, guide the airflow in the desired direction to increase flow and reduce power robbing turbulence.  This is a must have for all performance and heavy work applications.
